What does Philip love most about nature?

Philip loves experiencing nature and studying it. He loves to go on long walks and hikes to collect leaves, bones, and sticks to compare and think about what animal might have used them or how all of nature connects to all other parts of the world. He loves taking what he experiences and going to the library to find books on those animals or plants. Then the next time he sees one recalling his new knowledge and further adding to his love of nature.

What is Philip's favorite animal—and why?

His favorite animal is the white tailed deer as they are very common to see resting in the heat of the afternoon in our backyard but also one of the first bones he found that started his love of biology. Over the course of about 6 months he found various bones of deer and eventually collected enough to assemble a full skeleton after checking out a book of deer anatomy. He was so amazed by what deer hoof bones looked like and thought at first they were teeth from a meat eater.

What is Philip's favorite outdoor activity?

Philip’s favorite outdoor activity is hiking. He is very observant and careful to respect nature. He walks carefully after a rain when there are many California newts out. He always seems to find the biggest stick to hike with notices small things like snail trails, moss growing, hidden flowers, and animal scat and tracks. He always says “I love getting wet, like a duck” if we try to tell him it’s too rainy. He finds the biggest puddles to jump in and has never complained about being outside.
