Penelope has always had a love for the outdoors and animals. She volunteers at the Pasadena Humane Society and goes to Zoo Camp every year.

Receive Text UpdatesPenelope loves nature because it’s different everywhere she goes and is ever changing. She loves foraging for mushrooms with her dad (mushroom guide in hand), in the Angeles National Forest. She loves identifying insects that she finds in her school’s garden, around the neighborhood and in our local mountains. Being out in nature makes Penelope feels peaceful and calm in nature and loves to explore new hiking trails and campgrounds.
Penelope’s favorite animal is the axolotl. She loves the axolotl because of how rare they are and how they come in a variety of colors. In first grade, Penelope chose the axolotl for her Animal Habitat project. She loves that this animal stays in the juvenile stage for its entire life unless it leaves the water and lives on land. Penelope hopes to go to college to become a wildlife biologist that studies axolotls in the hopes of preserving this species.
Penelope’s favorite outdoor activity is camping. Penelope’s first camping trip was in Joshua Tree National Park at three months old. Penelope loves to help set up the tent and help maintain the campfire. She loves to roast marshmallows over the fire and make smores. One time, in Joshua Tree when we were sitting around the campfire at night, stargazing, we were joined by a family of kangaroo rats!
