What does Jackson love most about nature?

Nature creates water, food, and shelter for all plants and animals. It does more than humans could ever do on our own to stay alive and healthy. Even the parts of nature that seem not as colorful like the trunk of a tree help provide oxygen or a home for an animal. Jackson feels amazed and happy in nature because he feels like he is part of the environment. He collects leaves and stones that he finds beautiful and loves exploring his natural items using a microscope.

What is Jackson's favorite animal—and why?

Jackson is fascinated by the elusive Inland Taipan. He loves how this snake produces a potent venom to protect itself and learning how survives in the desert. This snake thermoregulates; In the winter, its coloring is darker to absorb light and heat and in the summer months it has a lighter color so it can reflect more light. Jackson is impressed the Inland Taipan hid for 90 years, when it lives in a place without many places to hide, and researchers couldn't find it to learn more about it.

What is Jackson's favorite outdoor activity?

Jackson loves to seek, observe, and interact with creatures wherever he is. He gently catches and studies moths and butterflies in the flower bed. He welcomes ladybugs, praying mantises, and beetles to crawl on him from our garden, and transplants isopods around the yard to aerate the soil. At the beach, he explores the shoreline digging for sand crabs and searching for ghost crab holes. Jackson says that finding creatures and caring for them in their homes is the most fun activity.
