After a long chat, Brooks told me his favorite thing about nature is that there will never be an end to learning about animals. He began by saying that he loves that animals have their own set of rules, different from our rules as humans. Animals can do whatever they want he says. They hunt, wrestle & don't have to go to school. Animals can be "mean/good" depending on mood, & the other animals don't stay mad, they "get it". Different animals = different rules, so there is endless learning.
PYTHONS (this week). Pythons are the coolest because they can eat things that are bigger than them, and their jaw opens up super wide to swallow their prey whole. Brooks is a big foodie, and wishes he could eat like a python. I wonder if that would be much different from when he eats with no hands like his favorite animal of the week. Time will surely tell.
24 is the record breaking number of frogs Brooks caught this past fall. "There is nothing better to do outside than frog catching" Brooks told me confidently. He spends ALL of his time outdoors in the stream that runs parallel to our road, barefoot and muddy. With all of his equipment at the ready, he brings all his nets & tanks with him for any one of our neighborhood friends to join him at any time. Brooks doesn't just find frogs, he catches and releases fish & crayfish fearlessly.
