Learn moreVaughn LOVES rocks, caves and volcanoes. We make special trips to caves and he has even hiked through a lava tube! As a toddler he filled his little pockets with the most unique pebbles he could find. As his eye became more keen, he excavated slag, bufffalo nickles, and flint through his digging. He loves spending time the ocean in Baja and in our Metropark Creek. He meanders and can ID animal tracks and scat, wasp nests and invasive plants. Nature restores him after a long school days!
His top three are: 1. Whale sharks. He has swam with whale sharks a few times, as our family makes special trips to a research lab in Baja each summer. 2. Orcas. While he would prefer a volcano hike to a marine mammal (long, true story) he loves orcas and has been lucky enough to see them teaching their calves to feed! 3. Nudibranchs! He calls them “sea blobs” and loves how hard they are to spot and how colorful and different they all are- much like the rocks and minerals he loves!
Vaughn LOVES swimming, hiking, creek walking, spelunking, and caring for 4H animals, but he also loves riding his Pro Scooter in skateparks. He has incredible patience learning new tricks. I suspect that patience formed in the thousands of hours he spent in nature, picking through rocks, snorkeling, pressing flowers, and tossing rocks in the creek. I worked as an outdoor educator so he could attend nature preschool and homeschooled (forest schooled) him during his COVID kindergarten.
