What does Truman love most about nature?

Truman finds joy in harvesting nature’s gifts—from fishing streams to gathering wild plants. These experiences have taught him survival skills and respect for nature’s rhythms. Guided by his Native American heritage, he honors each harvest with gratitude, viewing food as sacred. For Truman, caring for the Earth isn’t just a duty—it’s a way of life rooted in tradition, reverence, and celebration.

What is Truman's favorite animal—and why?

Truman’s favorite animal is wawúkya, the Umatilla word for elk. He admires their size, coloring, and grand antlers, and enjoys tracking them in the woods by their hoof prints and droppings. More than just a favorite, wawúkya is a vital food source and a meaningful part of his Native American heritage.

What is Truman's favorite outdoor activity?

Truman’s favorite outdoor activity is fishing, especially with his grandpa. He fishes the Columbia River for salmon and steelhead—both vital to his tribe’s way of life. A tradition since time immemorial, fishing connects him to his culture. He’s learned how dams and colonization have harmed fish populations, and with knowledge of watershed ecology passed down to him, Truman is not just a fisherman, but a fish advocate.
