Learn moreThe thing Miles loves most about nature is that it helps him feel calm and happy. Miles has autism, so indoor environments, especially those that are loud and chaotic, are often distressing for him. He needs significant daily time in nature to ensure his mental and physical health are optimal. He loves plants, animals, geology, weather, and all other aspects of nature, and wants to know all about how everything works. He wants to be a scientist when he grows up.
Miles loves all the animals, so it is difficult to pick just one, but ever since he was a baby he was fascinated with giraffes. Our local zoo has an overlook where giraffes can be observed grazing in the treetops, and he can sit for hours just watching them. But he has many other favorites. His favorite reptile is the bearded dragon, his favorite invertebrate is the rosy wolfsnail, and his favorite bird is the osprey. He loves learning all about animals and their environments.
Miles loves hiking and walking in nature, but his absolute favorite outdoor activity is boogie boarding at the beach. He loves the feeling of the waves as they take him for a ride. He also loves to play in the sand, and then walk on the beach to collect shells (and then identify the animals that made the shells). He is always careful to leave no trace when he's at the beach, he fills in holes to ensure that no sea turtle or other animal could get stuck, and picks up any trash he finds.
