What does Kaikana love most about nature?

Kaikana loves watching and observing—he's peculiarly interested in how things simply are. He’s curious about what bugs, trees, and birds (to name a few) do, why they do it, and how they’re able to live and thrive outside—self-sufficient, without a mom, dad, or a “home.” The “Why?” questions never stop coming!

What is Kaikana's favorite animal—and why?

Kaikana’s latest animal obsession? Parrots! He’s totally enchanted by their bright, rainbow feathers—especially our neighbor’s macaw—and how they can listen, talk back, and copy what people say. What really cracks him up, though, are their silly antics—the way they dance, joke around, and show off their big personalities. They're like little feathery comedians, and he can't get enough!

What is Kaikana's favorite outdoor activity?

On our little rock in the Pacific—Maui—adventures lead us to the mountains or the ocean. We hike trails, spot bugs, birds, and trees, and talk story about native species and human-planted forests. As a Lahaina Boy, the ocean is home. Kaikana swims like a fish, watches reef critters, turtles, monk seals, and whales (in season), learns to harvest from the sea, and hunts for shiny sea shells to add to our ‘ohana’s growing collection.
