She knows a mind-numbing amount of info about all kinds of creatures, from fish to cockroaches, snakes, bats, and big cats. Insatiable.

What is Jr. Ranger?
Learn more“What I love most about nature is getting dirty, poking around in crevices to find new creatures and understand how and where they live,” she says. Ivie enjoys learning through gentle interaction with and observation of reptiles, invertebrates, amphibians, birds, and fish. She is interested in the subtle and unusual ways different species interact with each other. In her words, “Unlike a lot of people I love holding invertebrates, snakes, snails, and other things like that.”
My favorite animal is a sable or albino, Hognose snake. They’re so fascinating because they can flatten out like a cobra, but their entire body does it. They have mild venom and rear fanged teeth, like all venomous snakes, that they use to puncture and pop toads so they can swallow them whole. Although they are venomous their venom is harmless to humans in most cases. (Some people react differently.) I’m the liaison for our giant hissing cockroach at school. I teach others how to care for him.
My favorite outdoor activity is hunting for insects, worms, slugs, and snakes in my backyard and anywhere I’m outside. I find snakes and spiders all the time, even though my mom is scared of them, I really like learning about how the species live in their natural environment and about the best habitat for them in the wild—and how to protect those habitats. And I like teaching and quizzing people about what I know and learn.
