He could go to the same clearing in the woods day after day, in different seasons, and enjoy a new adventure every time—finding and studying “critters,” playing pretend games with friends, setting up a hammock to listen to the birds, or building a dam in the creek. He is truly never bored as there is always something new to explore!
Greyson can’t limit his favorite animal to one, but he’s particularly fond of the lizards in North Carolina. Green anoles, five-lined and coal skinks, and Eastern fence lizards can hold his attention for hours. They are such fun to (gently) catch, and learn about—their habitats, diets, colors, patterns and unique defense mechanisms.
Other than scouting for lizards and snakes, Greyson loves to forage for wild edibles. He and his little brother, Auggie, are unofficially known as the resident experts in what is safe (or not) to eat in the woods by their nature-focused homeschool group and Trail Life USA scout troop. Typical favorite snacks include greenbrier shoots, wild violets, wild peas, hickory nuts, and persimmons.
