What is Jr. Ranger?
Learn moreAlbert loves catching flounder in our coastal estuaries, hiking, birding, gardening, flipping logs for snakes, and searching wetlands for salamanders. Most of all, he loves how calm he feels in nature. He says he needs a certain amount of outdoor time each week to meet his “quota”, avoiding places that aren’t “naturey.” An exceptionally observant child, Albert finds that nature gives him space to be quiet and notice everything.
Snakes. 100%. Albert knows every species—he’s a walking encyclopedia. He even finds errors in field guides (and he’s right!). After school, he’s out “flipping” for snakes and usually finds one or two. He tracks weather patterns and begs to go out when conditions are ideal. If you hike with Big Al, he’ll spot a snake. He’s taught me words like “gravid,” and “anticoagulant”. His passion is deep, detailed, and nonstop. He’s a budding herpetologist.
Hiking. He could hike for hours without tiring. One hot summer day, after chores, he chose to hike at a local Savannah wildlife preserve with no shade. It was 95 degrees, and at 6 years old, he hiked 7 miles—he wanted to keep going, but I had to stop! At 3, he’d already correct me birding: “That’s a red-tailed, not a red-shouldered hawk!” He’s always known so much about nature.
