What is Jr. Ranger?
Learn MoreZephyr is amazed at how different nature can be in different places, different seasons. He still talks fondly about making snowballs in a pine forest at Big Bear Lake one winter to exploring the prickly cacti and climbing over boulders in Joshua Tree National Park. He likes the desert a lot because it is warm and he loves trying to catch lizards and other reptiles. He also loves dinosaurs and has learned that places like the Badlands and dry desert environments often have dinosaur fossils.
Zephyr is a brave boy who loves some of the less cuddly parts of nature. He is fascinated by crocodiles and their tough skin and sharp teeth. When we go to the beach, he searches for crabs and likes to pretend to walk like a crab, making his hands like pincers. He seems drawn to animals with armor-like exteriors and is impressed by their strength under that armor. He also hopes to meet one day a sloth (with their long claws and unusual hair) and a koala in real life.
Zephyr loves riding his bike to explore our neighborhood, jumping off to find bugs and worms under rocks. He has a special hammer and safety glasses so he can crack open geodes and other interesting rocks he finds outdoors. I think he is hoping to find a fossil now that he understands how they are made! Now that it is spring, he is daily chasing butterflies, looking for ladybugs, counting the number of bees visiting our fruit trees, and helps us feed our chickens and collect their eggs.
